“The slowest car we have ever built”.
When the R8 was first released, everyone was obsessed and the newspapers were chatting about it. What really caught my eye, however, was the advert and its clever slogan. I remember sitting on the sofa when the ad came on, and being grabbed by the slow beauty of it. It didn’t take long to become hooked - I only had to see it for a second.
I ended up being one of a large crowd of people who fell in love with the R8. In fact, the months following the launch were jam packed with new stories, Top Gear reviews, articles and blogs all covering the same subject – just how very beautiful the car actually was. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like the lovely Audi R8,which I must say is an impressive and respectable achievement.
Sure they aren’t the slimmest cars around, but Audis are always attractive. Do you remember those adverts where an Audi used to rush up to the screen? Well that is how the brand will always be in my brain, scary and bull-like yet oh so tempting. The Audi TT started life as their feminine car, but the reworked new TT went a step further to make it elegant and bold. It was only one step up to create the wonderful car we see before us.
The Audi R8 looks stunning. With those dramatic tongue grooves and flashing alloys, it is clear that this car should get up to impressive speeds. In addition you then get to see the sumptious sporty leather interior and the astonishing chrome touches, and this car just gets better and better. I am of course a fan, but the shape of the R8 is easily one of the nicest I have ever seen, and always looks good in the street. Alongside this beast of a car, Audi are getting another taste of the action with an R8 Spyder, which is classy but not as desirable.
The V10 engine packed with strength is actually just a bonus for people who like speed, combined with a good looking car. Facts and stats can only tell you so much about a car - the only way to really find out, for me at least, is to see and even drive the car in real life.
Impressively, if you want to own a used Audi R8 rather than an expensive new one, the cost is quite dramatically reduced. I have actually come across these in showrooms for about £65k, a price that is a lot lower than many other competitor supercars on the market. Whilst exclusivity is good, for a car like this to be a little more reasonable is a brilliant step in the right directon. For those of us who dream of owning this car but who can’t, a simple used Audi will have to do the job for in the meantime!
