While driver enjoys “seat moving back” feature when key is out from ignition, passenger is climbing in its seat with a lot less comfort capability. Nonetheless both driver and passenger seats are comfortable even for a long ride. Praising designers for the Explorer’s dashboard I will withdraw a few compliments back while talking about inside door handles. As for me they are found too low to be good to grab to open/close the door for a standard size man.

Every vehicle today is a receptacle of cap holders and Explorer is no exception. But not every one has convenient and sufficiently large glove box, so our tester is definitely not a winner here.

I like adjustable pedals, it’s a great option. But is it safe to allow the driver to adjust pedal while driving?

There is plenty of room on a 2nd raw seats and roomy enough though less snug on a 3rd. At least you’ve got an option : carry 6 passengers and no baggage or four with descent cubic footage on a back of your Explorer.

For some reason all four doors of new Explorer in their lowest part are sharply curved towards the body of the vehicle and it’s cool and probably gives some additional rigidity. But if you are inclined to note with regret each new scratch on your beast/beauty body ( pick the one ) ; you’ll see them (scratches) for sure straight after taking Explorer off road for a first time. Scratches simply appear on a lower part of rear doors which sandwiches between the car’s frames and sidestep with so small clearance between, that sand and muds sticking to the doors are working as abrasives for all surfaces.
Few years ago I have tested then new Explorer 2001 together with others SUVs in a same class like Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Cherokee for example. That Ford Explorer wasn’t much different or worse than other contestants in terms of off road capabilities. But it was squeaking and crackling on every serious pothole or bump. There’s nothing like this on Explorer 2006.

Year after year customer demands more and more from the vehicle and auto requests to keep pace. Ford made it with the new Explorer. It is truly great truck.

If you aren’t an off road vehicle rider there are still fun times available whether it is by climbing or horseback riding along the dunes.  There are fifeteen adventureous miles of barren sand for you to appreciate.

White Sands in NM isn’t the only place with the beautiful white quartz sand.  St. Anthony Sand Dunes is another place where the sand grows eight feet every season.

There are campgrounds for you to stay at but be ready for some primitive camping at some of them.  They are unimproved with out door biffy’s - however there are some that are modern service for those that don’t want to go to the extreme.  RV’s are also permitted and there is a unpaved parking area for use with hook ups, even a store of sorts to get you those items that you forgot to pack.

Check out the challenges of Choke Cherry where you will probably have to ride up the back side since the front is too steep for most vehicles.  Then off to Devil’s Dune and Dead Horse Bowl along with a exciting bunch of other locations that you will discover as you ride the area.  Don’t just stop at the “main” dunes, explore the less used, and find the spot that is perfect for your desires.

Thunder Mountain is where everyone races so if you are into competitive racing this is the place to go.  You probably will want to race to the top and then go back down because the other side is very steep and not appropriate to racing.

The region is under the management of the Bureau of Land Management. There are regulations, like a five mph speed limit in the campgrounds that must be obeyed so you don’t risk your fellow campers.  If you abuse this you will be required to leave, and you should be!!

The dunes are located just 50 miles northwest of Idaho Falls, near St. Anthony in the beautiful Eastern region of Idaho, one of the most popular Idaho attractions.  Stop and relax and come again and again, you are more than welcome.
